In February 2006, researchers reported that many women suffer from a completely different heart disease for men and is easily missed by standard tests. Moreover, women not be treated as early as men, and the hearts of women are smaller and the blood vessels are easily damaged. Another possible reason is that the disease could manifest itself differently. As a result, women are less likely to survive heart attacks than men. Many women are still unaware that heart disease and stroke have emerged as the top killers of women around the world.

The researchers found that for some women, but obviously for the development of blockages in the arteries, the blood to the heart, accumulate plaque more evenly inside the major arteries and in smaller blood vessels. In other cases, their arteries do not expand, or go into spasm, often in times of physical or emotional stress. These anomalies are very common for younger women, and these can be dangerous because they could trigger life-threatening heart attacks.

Instead of the classic crushing chest pain, sweating and shortness of breath, complain they are often vague symptoms such as fatigue, an upset stomach or pain in the jaw or shoulders. This explains why some women suddenly have heart attacks, even though their arteries look clear, and in some cases, the doctors send them home without treatment or refer to psychiatrists. Even if they do get medical treatment, the women did not have the benefit of drugs or the standard therapies such as bypass surgery and angioplasty to reopen the clogged arteries. In many cases, these women whose arteries were evident in normal tests have a much higher risk of a heart attack or die within four or five years. The discrepancies could be due to the fact that hormonal changes or genetic differences, how their arteries respond. In America, there are no fewer than three million women suffer from these conditions.

Despite the new findings, many women have the same kind of heart disease than men, and they benefit from the same preventive measures and treatments that help men: a healthy diet and weight, regular exercise and a lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It is still unclear how best doctors can tackle these conditions, but the new findings are important for understanding a major health problem, and it also alerts the two women and their doctors about the alternative forms of the disease.
