infant congenital heart disease
Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the body is too little or ineffectively uses insulin, resulting in a high level of glucose in the blood. Diabetes has long been associated with heart disease. It is known that people with diabetes are more likely to develop , coronary heart disease (CHD) because diabetes can cause irritation of blood vessel walls affect cholesterol profile and raise blood pressure. The prevalence of developed countries like USA and Australia are 8.3 percent and 7.4 percent, as in 2004.
A report, published in 2004 in the medical journal Diabetes Care revealed that more than one fifth of patients with type 2 diabetes have decreased blood flow to the heart. However, no evidence indicates that there is a problem.
This serious condition, known as myocardial ischemia, occurs when the heart is not enough blood to the metabolic needs, usually by plaque formation in the coronary arteries. Experts show that disease as a "silent" if no symptoms present. No chest pain is experienced and in fact there are no signs at all before a heart attack.
Doctors usually have had difficulties in the early stages of heart disease in type-2-diabetes patients, because it can damage nerves throughout the body. Pain in the chest, which is the heart of the main signal is attenuated since insufficient blood and oxygen can be obtained.
The study was conducted by a group of researchers from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. The patients for the detection of ischemia in asymptomatic diabetics (DIADEM)-study in a way that it does not even begin to recognize the presence of heart disease.
The scientists found that even in these patients without symptoms, 22 percent had myocardial ischemia. The DIADEM study, researchers analyzed data of 522 patients with type 2 diabetes. Of the patients with silent myocardial ischemia, only 60 percent met American Diabetes Association (ADA) for cardiovascular screening.
Given the suspicion of the researchers, the amount of silent ischemia is even higher in the real world. The study shows again that diabetes is a very serious risk factor for heart disease. According to the researchers, the ADA should review their guidelines for the screening of heart disease for type 2 diabetes, because they seem to miss almost half the patients with silent disease.
