The risk of heart disease in women increases with age. Cardiovascular disease is the commonest cause of death among women over 40 years old, especially after menopause. Menopause is a normal phase in a woman's life, it includes all of the changes a woman before or after she stops menstruating. As menopause nears, the ovaries gradually less estrogen (female hormone), leading to changes in the menstrual cycle and other physical changes. Each year more than 500,000 U.S. women die from heart disease. This corresponds to approximately one death per minute.
