As one of the oldest living tree species, ginkgo trees in the area throughout the temperate regions of the world around 50 million years ago. However, one species, Ginkgo biloba, native to southeast China, survived the millennia while all others went extinct. Ginkgo has become one of the well-researched herbs in the world.

Ginkgo seeds have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. His ability to treat disorders and the improvement of memory was of scientific studies over the years.

However, the widely used and studied in medical purposes is the ginkgo leave. Ginkgo leaves are often not in their raw state. Rather, they are in the form of a concentrated, standardized Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE). In the last 30 years, more than 300 clinical studies have shown evidence that ginkgo prevents and benefits many problems throughout the body.

Ginkgo is used extensively as a brain, the memory tonic because of its positive effects on the vascular system. It is also used to treat dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and a variety of neurological disorders and circulation problems. Ginkgo may help to understand the impact of aging, including mental fatigue and lack of energy.

Ginkgo can also be used to prevent and overcome problems associated with heart disease. Standardized GbE inhibits platelet activity factor (PAF), a common allergen in the body. Physical stress, and poor quality food can stimulate PAF production, I other words, blood clotting. Excessive PAF can lead to cardiovascular disease, brain damage, hearing disorders and other immune and inflammatory diseases.

Ginkgo can also be used as a powerful antioxidant, which protect the eyes, cardiovascular system and central nervous system. Ginkgo can also help with the conversion of cholesterol to plaque associated with the hardening of the arteries and blood vessels are constricted.

The herb was also in the treatment of other diseases such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, Raynaud's syndrome, hemorrhoids and varicose veins. It can also help in the treatment of complications and poor distribution of stroke and skull injuries.

Ginkgo may also be beneficial in the treatment of eye and ear disorders. Studies have confirmed that ginkgo increases blood flow to the retina, and it resulting deterioration of the retina to an increase in visual acuity. In clinical tests ginkgo has improved hearing loss in older people. It also helps to improve circulation relieving cold hands and feet, swelling in the limbs and chronic arterial occlusion.

Ginkgo is currently being used as a potential treatment to prevent rejection of transplanted organs, for the treatment of asthma and for toxic shock syndrome.

GbE is considered safe with very rare side effects, but there were few cases of gastro-intestinal disturbances, headache, dizziness and skin reactions reported. Because of its ability to decrease platelet aggregation (stickiness), there is concern that it increases risk of intracranial (brain) hemorrhage. So, if you deal with blood or other medications, you should consult your doctor before using ginkgo. It is also used by experts that ginkgo should not be used by pregnant and lactating women, and should be at least 36 hours before surgery because the risk of bleeding complications.
