ischemic heart disease patient

heart disease is the number one killer in the world. One of every two men and one in three women develop heart disease. The United Kingdom has one of the highest death from cardiovascular disease in the world - one British adult dies from the disease every three minutes - and strokes are the country's third biggest killer, claiming 70,000 people per year of life.

Heart disease is the common name for a number of conditions, including:

Coronary heart disease (including heart attack) Abnormal heart rhythms or arrythmias cardiac valvular prostheses disease Congenital heart defects heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy) pericardial disease, aorta disease Marfan syndrome and vascular diseases (diseases of the blood vessels)

Facts

Before 1920, Coronary heart disease (CHD) in practice rare in America, but by the mid-fifties was the most common cause of death among Americans (which is consistent with most Western countries). What had changed?

While modern medicine would have us believe that this epidemic is the result of nutrition, high cholesterol and saturated fat, here are a few interesting facts that contradict this claim: 1910 to 1970, consumption of animal fats declined by 83 % to 62%; butter fell from 18 pounds to 4 pounds per year, and margarine, oils and shortening consumption increased by 400%.

In order to determine the scientific validity of the proposed link, it is first important to understand the role of cholesterol.

Each cell membrane in our body contains cholesterol because cholesterol is what makes our cells waterproof - without cholesterol, we have no other biochemistry on the inside and the outside of the cell. When cholesterol levels are not adequate, the cell is leaky or porous, a situation the body interprets as an emergency measure, which release a flood of corticoids hormones that work through the cholesterol from one part of the body and transport in areas where it none.

Thus, low cholesterol - whether due to an inborn error of metabolism or cholesterol-lowering diets and drugs - can be expected to disrupt the production of adrenal hormones and glucose to problems, edema, mineral deficiencies, chronic inflammation, difficulty in healing, allergies, asthma, reduced libido, infertility and various reproductive problems (1).

Other cholesterol facts:

Cholesterol is the body's repair substance: scar tissue contains high cholesterol.

The bile salts necessary for the digestion of fat, cholesterol from. Those who suffer from low cholesterol often have problems to digest fats.

Cholesterol is also a powerful antioxidant, so that us against cancer and aging.

Cholesterol is required for the proper neurological function. About 17% of the human brain is composed of cholesterol.

So what is happening when the body produces a large amount of cholesterol?

Through the use of its function, one could hypothesis that in a good state of repair. From what? Ever heard of free radicals? Try this for size: "If these naked, wildly destructive electrons [free radicals] are on the loose, but also eat holes in arteries, which then attract natural band-aid: cholesterol. "(2)

What happens if we consider the statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs)? "Instead of seeing cholesterol as a messenger of free radical overload, or a call to arms to find the underlying problem, we kill the messenger (cholesterol) with drugs. Unfortunately, the cholesterol-lowering drugs that act by inhibiting of the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is composed of the body's ability to coenzyme Q10. This omission ensures that the victims go on to high blood pressure, heart failure, cancer or other consequences. "(2)

Statins - the wonder drug?

Statins, the new "miracle drugs" are currently the best selling drugs in the world with an annual turnover of more than U.S. $ 19 billion. In the United Kingdom under the NHS, doctors wrote 31 million prescriptions for statins in 2003, up from 1 million in 1995 at a cost of 7 billion pounds. (3)

That is a lot of money, from an already depleted health service to fund a drug that the effectiveness in increasing the life expectancy is questionable, and has shown severe side effects.

Here are just a few more facts about statins:

"The November 2003 by Smart Money magazine reports on a study in 1999 in St. Thomas' Hospital in London (apparently unpublished), which showed that 36 percent of patients taking Lipitor, the highest dose reported side effects, even at the lowest dose , 10 percent reported side effects. "(1)

"Active people are much more likely to develop problems from statin use than those who are sedentary. In a study conducted in Austria, only six of 22 athletes with familial hypercholesterolaemia could endure statin treatment. The others, because the treatment of muscle pain "(1).

Vioxx - another miracle drug

However, it was estimated that such a wonder drug, Vioxx, could cause 27,785 heart attacks or deaths since it is intended for use in the year 1999. In September 2004, Vioxx because of concerns for health. Today, more than 4,200 complaints filed against Merck for the drug, but Merck lawyers contend that "There is no reliable scientific evidence that shows Vioxx causes cardiac arrhythmias. "(4)

Why is cholesterol the enemy? Good question

Dr. Paul J. Rosch gives a better understanding of how the results can be manipulated in his article "More on the absurd Polypill Panacea". Rosch investigated the new Polypill (a pill containing a statin, and various other drugs, are entitled to reduction of heart disease by 80%) and gives an overview of the concepts, as the researchers, the terms "relative risk reduction, absolute risk Reduction "and" number needed to treat to spin the truth. This is reminiscent of a comment by Harry Truman: "If you can not convince them to be confused." (5)
