The word menopause is the cessation of menstruation (menstruation) and is a normal phase in a woman's life. Normally it takes between the ages of 45 and 55 years, but it can happen as early as 35 years.

What happens during menopause?

When a baby girl was born, she has all the eggs in her ovaries that they raise. Finally, this is being phased out and the ovaries stop releasing eggs. During this lime, the level of female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone by the ovaries, too unstable and fall out. It is the reduction of estrogen that causes the classic symptoms of menopause: hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, insomnia, depression, and loss of bone density.

Many women have no symptoms during their menopausal years, but for approximately one third of women, there are unpleasant physical and psychological symptoms. If you bleed after your period stops, you will find a doctor.

What treatments are there?

The conventional medical treatment of menopausal symptoms is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Women who still have the womb Hove, a combination of estrogen and a synthetic progestin (progesterone-like drugs), because estrogen alone increases the risk of endometrial (uterine lining) cancer, and breast and ovarian cancer. Women who have a hysterectomy only required to estrogen. HRT can relieve symptoms like hot flashes about 90 percent of the time, although only about 20 percent of women with symptoms, which they choose.

Estrogen and progesterone had a protective effect against cardiovascular disease (and women have a lower risk of heart disease), but HRT is no longer the women to protect against heart disease. It is now of the view that HRT may increase the risk of heart disease in the first year of taking the medications, or for those who already with heart disease.

HRT is not for some women, as it does with a history of thrombosis (blood clots], or abnormal bleeding. Some women take HRT because of minor but unpleasant side effects such as breast tenderness, weight gain, nausea, headaches, itchy skin rashes, and fluid retention. Other conventional medicine in menopause are hot flashes clonidine for severe and antidepressants.

Additional treatments can also help with the symptoms of menopause. There is scientific evidence to naturopathy, nutritional therapy, relaxation techniques and herbal medicine. Helpful herbal medicines are St. John's wort for mild to moderate depression, valerian for insomnia, stress vervain and black cohosh, chaste tree, sage, or wild yam for hormonal irregularity. The evidence for black cohosh is particularly strong, followed by that chaste tree. Vitamin E or pot marigold cream can help with vaginal dryness.

Shatavari is a Ayurvedic Tonic have a regenerative effect on the female organs and female hormones that help with symptoms such as drought, excessive thirst, hot flashes, and loss of libido, although clinical studies are lacking. Therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy can help, but the evidence is anecdotal.

Counseling or psychotherapy can help depressed women it difficult for children at home, old age or aging. The preventive measures in the sections on heart disease and osteoporosis are also important. Natural progesterone creams are promoted for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. A study suggests that they could help with hot flashes, but there is little evidence that they prevent osteoporosis.

There is increasing evidence for the benefits of soy foods and supplements that phytoestrogens with hormonal properties.

HRT has been widely used for women who suffer from a variety of symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances and depression, but recent studies have shown that is perhaps not the best option for the relief of symptoms, or for your long-term health either.
